The Porch Ceiling

This weekend we accomplished a major  project. We  put the ceilings up on the porch.

 Two people plus one lift equals a long day.

 I do not like working on anything electrical but I can. And It actually works!

Okay ...Okay ...Already...Here is your update!!!

So, in the last update  in the ongoing saga of our farmhouse renovation, we left off at the point where the floors were ready to be sanded and finished; the kitchen appliances were set in place but not working; the plumbing was working (somewhat...No Hot Water!).


I knew sanding the floors would be hard work but now I have a new understanding of the term "Hard Work"

 We rented two sanders. A belt flooring sander and a random-orbital sander. My Husband used the belt sander to level the floors and I followed behind him with the random-orbital sander to make them smooth. We worked hard for two days to get this done. We did not like the way they turned out, not smooth enough, so we and our son hand sanded the entire house with a palm sander to get it the way we wanted.

 After we sanded the floors we had to vacuum EVERYTHING. The walls, ceilings, floors, windows...EVERYTHING... Then we applied an oil-based polyurethane. That stuff really was harsh. It took weeks for the smell to subside enough to continue working in the house; But the results are Beautiful!!!

 

 

When were able to return to working in the house I started to tile the main bathroom shower. I thought working with larger tiles would go faster than the smaller tiles. I was Wrong! It took longer and was more work than I anticipated.

 

 While I worked on the shower my husband was working on installing the baseboards and trim as well as finishing the first room in the house.

Update to the Update

I have an update to the update...Over the weekend we installed the new Range Hood over the gas stove  and maneuvered  the Wood Cook stove in place ( That thing is Very Heavy). I also finished grouting the tiles in the kitchen.

It has been a while since the last update and we have been very busy. All of the hard wood floors are in The  stairs are finished. The kitchen and bathrooms are showing great progress.

My Father built the Stairs. They are absolutely Beautiful!

 

My husband  has installed the kitchen cabinets we purchased from the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. They were not  made for a Galley kitchen but he reworked them to fit.  Isn't he Awesome!!

This is the tile surround which will be behind the wood cook-stove, which will be installed later.

 

 

 

 The back splash was a lot of fun to put in.

 I love the vanities. Each has it's own charm.

Floors, Doors and More

It seems like forever since we started this project. But now I believe we are nearing the end. It actually looks like a house. instead of a bunch of lumber strategically placed to hold up the roof.




The Hard Wood floors were a wonderful find. I found a local lumber mill which had 6 inch red oak at a price that could not be beat. It took several weeks but we got them all down and I think they look great.

 The tile we found at a local discount store for 39 cents a square foot.. They were supposed to be misprints. But we did not find a single tile that was printed wrong. 

 

 The doors we found at another discount store. They were also a great find.

Last but not least we had the yard graded near the house.

Spring Update

We had a long cold winter this year. That being said, we did not get much work accomplished.

When spring finally arrived, we went back to work. In the eight weeks since we started working again we have accomplished a lot. We completed the Electrical rough-in, finished the plumbing rough-in, had the insulation installed, and  had the drywall installed and finished.




The wiring took the most time to complete. But, I think it is a like a work of art that no one will ever see. Every wire is neatly stapled in place. Every junction box is labeled. The most important thing is everything works. I am Very Proud of the work that my Husband has done! (FYI...my husband is not an electrician.)

We had the plumbing installed by a professional. We attempted to install it ourselves. (That was a miserable failure.) Everything we had installed had to be removed and replaced. We learned our lesson on attempting to do things ourselves that we know nothing about.

After learning our lesson with the plumbing we hired someone install the insulation.

 The Drywall was delivered, installed and finished in one week.

We have primed and painted the walls. But, I will have to add those photos tomorrow.

The Porch... Continued

I have had many thoughts about what my dream porch would look like. But, I never imagined how much work it would take or how long it would take to complete. The hard work and effort of so many people made the following photos possible.  

Starting with the base decking system. we began to work our way upward.

 After the decking was installed we had to do a little work on the eves. (cut them off). This raised the ceiling height of the porch.

Then it was time to start working on the ceiling and rafters.

As you can see, the difference in the this side of the house is amazing.

We added house wrap and are waiting for the roofers to lay the shingles.

Partial Porch Update

I believe this house as always needed a front porch. So, it now has one... At least it has part of one. We  are working around the house adding the porch. I know it is not finished yet but you can get an idea of what it is going to look like.

Starting from the ground up we dug footers and set the forms before poring the concrete. 

After the concrete had cured we set the post for the porch roof system.

 The view from the porch is  wonderful and we get a constant breeze to keep it cool.

 Hopefully we will be completing the other half of the porch next week.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

It has been hot here in the South (Very Hot) and I did not think my garden would survive.  With temperatures around 108 degrees and no rain for several weeks. I thought my experiment with a full sized garden was doomed to failure. But, God is good and the heatwave broke. The rains returned and the garden began to flourish once again.
 
Since I am new to this type of gardening I didn't know really what to expect. I have not used any pesticides. (If the bugs won't eat it. Why should you?) Also, only the corn had fertilizer added to help it along.

 

 

 

 It is amazing how the corn is standing. We had a thunderstorm several weeks ago and half of the corn was laid over on the ground. Now look at it! It stood back up!!

Now that everything is growing so well.

The next question is ...When Do I Harvest?  I do know when to harvest some things like Okra. But, the Lima Beans, Speckled Butter Beans and Crowder Peas are all new to me.
